ARTIST: El Anatsui

Sunday, April 5, 2021  – 7:30-8:30 pm via Zoom. Free & Open to the Public. RegisterPrint.

The only preparation for the workshop is to randomly gather materials that you have around the house, inside or outside, to create a sculpture. There are no must haves or right or wrong materials for this project. It is best to not think about what you will be making as you gather materials, just collect things that resonate with you or that you just happen upon. There will be time after we discuss the Anatsui’s process and our project to add more materials from items you may have stashed at home.

Examples of items to gather and bring to your work area for the Master Class:

• a cutting tool – i.e. scissors or utility knife (a cutting surface if using a utility knife, like a cutting mat, piece of cardboard, or kitchen cutting board)
• adhesive – i.e. tape and/or glue
• textile(s): piece(s) of fabric
• foil and/or wire i.e., aluminum foil or thin gauge wire (like beading wire or wire mesh).
• wire cutter if needed for the above metal.
• metal bottle caps (there is no correct quantity, bring what you have on hand and you can always add more later
• a punch and hammer to make holes in the bottle caps (if the caps are metal a nail and hammer will work as a punch; you will need a surface to punch on)
• assorted scrap paper
• a paper hole punch or awl
• material to tie and bundle your textiles, foil/wire, and paper, such as thread / string/yarn/twisty ties
• whatever else you fancy – plastic mesh, cardboard, wood, metal, textiles, leaves, twigs, stones, etc.

OPTIONAL: Since “spirit” is a keyword for Anatsui’s work, it might be fun to incorporate your spirit animal or archetype in your work. If you would like to include info about your spirit animal or archetype, bring an object that can represent those attributes (abstractly or figuratively) to your stash of materials. If you would like to explore your spirit animal before the workshop, here is a link to some info and a quiz to find your spirit animal: https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/how-to-find-your-spirit-animal

WORK AREA: A flat surface where you are comfortable creating, such as, your kitchen table or work bench. If you will be hammering make sure to have an area that is sturdy.
